CONGRATULATIONS TO VALERIE COOKE AS 2001 OUTSTANDING WOMAN LAWYER
CONGRATULATIONS TO the Honorable Valerie Cooke as the recipient of NNWLA Outstanding Woman Lawyer Award for 2001! The Award Dinner will be this fall and we need people to serve on the planning committee. Get involved with NNWLA - it will be fun- we promise!
The first planning committee meeting is scheduled for Noon on Thursday, March 22, 2001 at the law offices of Jones Vargas, 100 West Liberty Street, 12th Floor. You can either bring lunch or buy something from the Corner Café in the building to bring upstairs. Please contact Amy Tirre at 788-2209 for further information.
The NNWLA Board approved, as we did in previous years, to donate $250 to support those students from Reed High School competing in Washington D.C. in the National We the People… the Citizen and the Constitution competition in April, 2001. Reed High School won at the state level last year for the honor of representing Nevada at the competition. We will be able to observe some a demonstration of their knowledge and ask questions at our next NNWLA Luncheon. We wish them the very best of luck.
If you would like to make a donation, please make your check payable to
“Nevada Center for Law-Related Education” and mail to Judith Simpson, 2678
Alpine Creek Road, Reno, Nevada 89509.
GENDER EQUITY COMMITTEE
During this
Legislative season, the Nevada Legislature will consider the addition of
approximately one million dollars per annum to promote gender equity in
athletics at UNR and UNLV. These
additional funds will enable UNR to add the sport of softball to its
program. In order to promote this goal,
Pack PAWS and the Gender Equity committee have arranged two events - Girls’ and
Women’s Sports Day at the Nevada Legislature on February 20,2001 and a
reception for the Nevada Legislature at the Law Offices of Allison, McKenzie,
Hartman, Soumbeniotis & Russell in Carson City on March 14,2001 at 5:30
pm.
The Girl’s and Women’s
Sports Day was a great success.
Approximately 150 elementary and middle school students from Reno,
Sparks and Carson City participated.
Many legislators hosted the young sportswomen at their desks during a
joint session. Pack PAWS and the gender
equity committee hosted a lunch after the joint session. Nevada Supreme Court Justices Miriam
Shearing and Deborah Agosti also addressed the young sportswomen along with
several legislators and university student athletes.
Mark your calendars
and support this great issue by attending the Legislative Reception on March
14,2001 at 5:30pm. RSVP to Victoria
Mendoza at 324-7533. See you there!
Also mark your
calendars for the Salute to Champions on Thursday, April 5,2001 at the Silver
Legacy. Olympic Softball Player Dot
Richardson will be the keynote speaker.
Come support the UNR’s Women’s Athletic Program. Call 786-6900 or the Law Offices of Victoria
Mendoza for more information. See you
there!
SCHOLARSHIP DONATIONS
ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE!
The scholarship committee and NNWLA continue to seek tax deductible donations to assist a female law student with her law school expenses. Our goal is to exceed the $1,000 scholarship award amounts that we have provided to women students for the past two years. The donation is supportive of women in our profession and truly appreciated. Please help support a future colleague. Contact Jill Greiner for more information at 322-8443.
