Yes, it's time again for dues! They are $35.00 for those who have practiced less than 2 years. Fifty dollars ($50.00) for those who have practiced for more than 2 years. One hundred dollars ($100.00) for sustaining members.

It is time to re-enlist for another productive year with NNWLA. The Board is interested in getting more information and feedback from our members so that NNWLA can better serve you in 2000. Please fill out the Membership Registration form enclosed in this newsletter, and return it with your 2000 membership dues payment as soon as possible. (Those of you who have sent dues already, please submit a form, thank you)

Beginning in March of 2000, we will send the monthly newsletter by mail only to the dues-paying members of NNWLA. This is an effort to make more efficient use of our limited financial resources by minimalizing excess copying and postage costs. We also plan to have a copy of each month's newsletter posted on our website at: www.NNWLA.org. If you enjoy receiving your NNWLA SCOOP by mail, make sure that you get your dues submitted now. If you are a member who would prefer NOT to receive a hard copy of the newsletter by conventional mail, please be sure to so indicate on the Membership Registration form.

2000 EXECUTIVE BOARD

Welcome to the year 2000 - a whole new year and a new century! For NNWLA this marks our 22nd year of support and service to Women Lawyers of Northern Nevada. When we commenced our organization in 1978 there were few women lawyers around, not to mention no women judges in the state and no women partners in major law firms. In fact, only one hundred women had ever been admitted to the Nevada Bar! Many things have changed in 22 years - most of them good. We now have three women Supreme Court Judges, several women State Court Judges, one women Federal District Judge, one Federal Magistrate Judge, and several women partners in major law firms. There are certainly many reasons to celebrate! But as many of you know, there is still much to be done to maintain our successes and to reach for true parity and equality in the profession.

This year our theme will be Promoting and Advancing Women in the Legal Profession. The 2000 Executive Board is eager and excited about this year and our programs will show it. Our 2000 NNWLA Executive Board consists of the following dedicated members.

VICTORIA MENDOZA, President

Victoria Mendoza will serve as president of NNWLA this year. She has served on the Executive Board since 1996, as treasurer, secretary, vice president and now president. She has been a member of NNWLA since 1978 when she was admitted to the Nevada Bar. Vicky grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada and moved to Reno after she graduated from the University of Notre Dame Law School in 1978.

She practices primarily in the area of family law. Besides being the president of NNWLA, she is also the president of Pack PAWS, a member of SITM, and member of the Board of Governors of Nevada Trial Lawyers. She is a marathon runner and an enthusiastic supporter of college athletics - especially women's college athletics.

GABRIELLE CARR, Vice President

Gabrielle Jeanne Carr has been elected as Vice President for this year. Gabrielle has served as Treasurer for the past two years. Gabrielle is a native of Nevada although she has lived all over the country from Connecticut to Hawaii. She graduated from Whittier Law School in December, 1993 and has been practicing in the Reno area ever since. She is currently employed as a Deputy Attorney General with the Attorney General's Office for the State of Nevada. Gabrielle enjoys lifting weights, exercise, hiking, traveling, movies and chocolate.

AMY TIRRE, Secretary

Amy Tirre is a civil trial lawyer with the firm of Robert H. Perry, Ltd. She is licensed in both Nevada and California, practicing primarily in the areas of personal injury law, insurance bad faith, medical malpractice and consumer fraud.

Amy's prior positions were with the Nevada Supreme Court and U.S. District Court in California. Amy graduated from Pomona College with degrees in Psychology and Public Policy and received her law degree from UC Davis School of Law. Amy has lived at Lake Tahoe since 1994.

NATHALIE HUYNH, Treasurer

Nathalie Huynh moved to Reno in 1995 from Southern California with her husband, Steve Brazelton, who is also an attorney. She worked for four years at Lionel Sawyer & Collins before leaving this past August to pursue contract work. Nathalie was born in Vietnam and enjoys cooking and quilting.

LORI STORY, Historian

Lori Story graduated from UNR in 1995 and obtained her law degree at Hastings in 1998. She is a bar member of both California and Nevada and is currently employed as a pro se staff attorney.

Lori is married and has one son. She moved to Reno from Minden two years ago. Lori has been a Nevada resident since 1986 and she enjoys hiking, camping and outdoor activities.

FROM THE WASHOE COUNTY

LAW LIBRARY

BASIC INTERNET RESEARCH

It's 7:00 p.m. and you need to find a 9th Circuit opinion to clinch your case or you need to research the legislative history for a Nevada statute. . . where do you start?

Attorneys who are new to using Internet legal resources will benefit from this class. Participants will view Federal and Nevada web sites for primary or secondary legal materials.

The hand's on class is limited to four participants. A list of internet bookmarks will be used in the class and given to each participant. Questions to stump the librarian are welcome.

Classes are scheduled for January 20 & 27 (Thursday) from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Please call D.J. Morrison (328-3250) to reserve a seat.

BOOK CIRCULATION CARDS

It is time to renew your book circulation cards for next year. The cost to renew your card is $30 per calendar year and you have until January 31 to renew your card for the year 2000. Book circulation cards now have bar codes and will be reused so don't throw away your card. Information in our computer files needs to be updated when you pay your fees. Please call the library to have an application form sent to you or stop by the library to complete a form with your current telephone number and address.

LAWYER IN THE LIBRARY PROGRAM

The first VLWC Lawyer in the library program was held Dec. 1 at the Washoe County Law Library. Glade Hall was the first lawyer to participate and met individually with eight people. It is hoped to have a lawyer in the library every Wednesday who can provide limited legal advice on topics such as wills, immigration, bankruptcy, labor law and domestic relations.

The Lawyer in the Library program offers an excellent opportunity to meet the SCR 191 aspirational goal of 20 hours of pro bono service and helps to meet the need of pro bono assistance in Washoe County. Attorneys interested in volunteering their time should contact Volunteer Lawyers at 329-9069.
