PROPOSAL FOR MEMBERS TO VOTE UPON AT AUGUST MEETING

PARTNERS IN EDUCATION

TRANER MIDDLE SCHOOL

The NNWLA board has reviewed and approved a proposal that NNWLA become a partner in education with Traner Middle School for a three-year period, beginning in September 2001. The purpose of this program is to support and advance opportunities for middle school girls who would greatly benefit from such a program. During the first year of the program, NNWLA would do as follows:

1. Sponsor a Speakers Bureau: NNWLA members and others would be invited to speak to classes, assemblies, and other groups on topics such as the judicial system, domestic violence, and juvenile crime issues. NNWLA members would also be encouraged to speak on other areas that may interest them in art, music, sports, etc., or refer others who might by interested. This is strictly voluntary.

2. University of Nevada Sports-Pizza Night: NNWLA members would volunteer to take groups of girls to University of Nevada women’s soccer, volleyball and basketball game, followed by pizza. We hope to schedule six field trips over the year.

3. Moms and Daughters Clothes Closet: Because there is a great need for clothing for moms and daughters, NNWLA would sponsor two clothes closet trips for moms and daughters at Traner on Saturday mornings in November and April. NNWLA members would be asked to donate girls and women’s clothing and accessories.

4. Girls Basketball Uniforms: Traner is one of very few Washoe County middle schools that does not have uniforms for its girls basketball teams. It is proposed that NNWLA allocate funds this year to purchase uniforms for the 8th grade A and B teams, and that funds be allocated in 2002 to purchase uniforms for the 7th grade A and B teams. The cost this year would be $1,520.00 for the 8th grade uniforms.

5. Summer Camp Scholarship Fund: Girls at Traner cannot take advantage of the many summer camp opportunities in the area because they cannot afford the tuition. NNWLA would establish a scholarship fund for the sole purpose of paying summer camp tuition for Traner girls who would like to attend sports or other camps. Donations to this fund are voluntary.

The NNWLA membership present at the August 21, 2001 meeting will be asked to consider and vote on whether to approve this proposal, since it involves expenditure of funds and involves a three-year commitment by NNWLA.

2001 NNWLA SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS SELECTED

Law students Kelly Partin, a previous NNWLA scholarship recipient, and Cynthia Rusnok Hoover have been selected as recipients of the 2001 NNWLA scholarship award. Each will receive a scholarship in the amount of $750.00.

Kelly Partin is a law student at Golden Gate University and is currently working for Scott Freeman, Esq. Cynthia Rusnok ("Rusty") Hoover is a law student at U.C. Davis and is spending her second summer at Bible, Hoy and Trachok.
